Bringing 20s glamour back to the City at The Ned

Bringing 20s glamour back to the City at The Ned

When the Midlands Bank building in London City was designed and built in the 1920s under the stewardship of Sir Edwin ‘Ned’ Lutyens, no effort or expense was spared on the creation of an exquisite edifice, spectacularly detailed inside and out.

Fast forward a century, and after many years of disuse and neglect, this Grade I listed building has been restored to its former glory – and then some – by an investment partnership sympathetic to Lutyens’ passion for grandeur and fine detailing.

Old world glamour, reinvented

Reopened in 2018 as an exclusive hotel, spa and members’ club, The Ned, as it’s now known, is one of London’s hottest venues.  Reimagined for a highly affluent, 21st century clientele by the team behind London’s famous Soho House, it now boasts a rooftop wellness complex with pool, 250 luxurious suites and a decadent members-only cocktail bar in the original bank vault.

Drawing inspiration from the roaring 20s, The Ned is replete with Art Deco detailing, including many original features such as the majestic green marble colonnades of the ground floor, the original hanging lights, and the imposing, circular bank vault door.

Exquisitely detailed

Exquisite taste sets this building apart, and from its grand façade to the most discreet interior details, nothing has been left to chance.  Fitzroy of London was thrilled to collaborate with The Ned’s creators on the inclusive washroom facilities throughout the hotel, gym and spa, comprising more than 25 separate washrooms in total.

Sleek & cosmopolitan

Finished in classic 1920s style with a 21st century twist, the washrooms throughout the hotel are suffused with cosmopolitan glamour, using opulent materials and sleek, late Deco-inspired forms.

The design team at The Ned tasked us with matching the same look and feel throughout their inclusive facilities, which we did using our Portland range, manufactured in solid brass with an antique finish.

We supplied solid brass grab rails and hinged support rails finished with softly rounded finials, plus solid brass shower seat and back rests, both with polished teak accents for comfort and durability, to create supremely functional yet luxurious spaces catering for the needs of all guests at this extraordinary venue.
