Le Grand Contrôle: Deluxe inclusive washrooms fit for royalty

Spending a night at the Palace of Versailles is a once-in-a-lifetime experience reserved exclusively for Royals and dignitaries – or it was, until 2021 when Airelles opened the first ever hotel to operate from within the grounds of Louis XIV’s famous residence.

Built for the Duke de Beauvilliers in the 1680s and later home to the controller of Louis XVI’s exchequer, Le Grand Contrôle is situated inside the Chateau grounds, overlooking the Orangerie gardens and the monumental stone staircases leading up to the palace.

These grand stone buildings had fallen into disuse before a €50 million renovation restored them to their 18th-century splendour, with 14 rooms & suites, a haute-gastronomy restaurant by Alain Ducasse, a Valmont spa and a 49-foot indoor swimming pool.  Guests at the hotel enjoy personal butler service as well as exclusive, after-hours access to the Palace as part of their stay.

Inspired by the past

The design team, led by Paris-based interior designer Christophe Tollemer, chose 1788 – the year before the Revolution – as a reference for the extravagant floral fabrics throughout Le Grand Contrôle, recreating original prints from records in the Versailles archives.

Period and reproduction furniture have been meticulously sourced for the spacious, high-ceilinged interiors which feature gilded wall panels, parquet floors and grand, marble fireplaces. The side tables are laid with bowls of seasonal fruit and Ladurée macarons.

Decadently inclusive

Of course, no luxury hotel suite is complete without a decadent bathroom and Le Grand Contrôle is no exception.

Drawing on 18th Century design influences, the washroom interiors are every bit as sumptuous as one might expect, with rolltop baths and freestanding washstands echoing the style of the period, and bespoke, reproduction hardware providing a final flourish.

Bespoke design

Fitzroy of London was honoured to collaborate on the design of bespoke inclusive washroom accessories for these immaculate interiors.  Created in line with the hotel’s distinctive aesthetic and crafted in polished nickel to blend seamlessly with the existing fixtures and fittings, they were also designed in compliance with the relevant French regulations around accessibility.

In addition, we provided bespoke grab rails to the same standards for the hotel’s basement spa, which is accessible by lift and provides a truly indulgent experience for all guests.

Fitzroy of London is a pioneer of accessible washroom accessories for deluxe interiors in hospitality, commercial and private interiors.  We offer a complete design and specification service that enables our clients to realize their vision on inclusivity and aesthetic.  To discuss your unique requirements, get in touch.
